Coraline 3D-- Animation and Themes are Cute as a Button. Movie commentary Analysis Review

Is it me or is there an increasing number of 3d movies? It's great because I love em :) Most of them are worth watching just for the fun of the 3d effects. Coraline is one of them-- but actually NOT for the 3d effects. I definitely expected a lot more 3d effects coming from a movie with such unique graphics and character designs. In that sense, I was disappointed because I saw how much potential there was for that movie. Oh but the intro's 3d effects were AWESOME. It's a cute story. (It was also based on a novel by Neil Gaiman-- I haven't read it yet but I wonder which is better...) A very child-oriented plot. Coraline even asked me to reconsider my relationship with my parents. (See? This is good for rebellious and consciencious teens too! ) It's great for watching with friends just for something to do. It's not absolutely the most interesting plot-wise and the movie definitely gets a bit lengthy. It's got a cool theme to it--- Nightmare Before Christmas-esque qualities and a Tim Burton "feel to things. There were a few cool 3d things, such as their window effects-- when the screen transitions from the outside of the glass to the inside, it felt super cool, like transporting through a portal. There's also the initial sewing that takes place where it looks like the needle is coming towards you. However, most of the effects were just certain parts of the background that kinda stood out a little... not really 3d... maybe 2.5d. Despite the lack of amazing 3d-ness, it's got eerily beautiful scenes that prove the creativity of certain individuals whom I do not know. Take the garden for example; it's got amazing colors and shapes where things are literally what they are. Coraline's hair REALLY stood out to me... Every time there was a closeup of it, I was just mesmerized. It's this beautiful bright blue that I wished my hair some-what had. Would you bring very young children? I wouldn't. Some things about it are kinda freaky, like the weird "witch" and how she kept pushing Coraline to get buttons sewed onto her eyes... I would say children 5 and up. Again, I wouldn't re-watch it, especially for that price, but certainly give it a chance if you haven't seen it-- you may end up really liking it!

A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life - only much better. But when her adventure turns dangerous, and her counterfeit parents (including Other Mother) try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home - and save her family.
